What Is It Being Independent Webcam Model

by Alex Shwarz on June 2, 2011 · 3 comments

Undress Jess has recently published this great video (splitted in 3 parts) where she’s telling why she doesn’t consider herself a typical cam girl. Sure she is not typical – she is independent! While other girls burn themselves out 8-10 hours a day on cam sites, Undress Jess spends just 6-8 hours a week! She runs her independent membership web site for about 5 years now and most of her income comes from there.

This video is very educational too. Undress Jess warns you how not to get in trouble when you decide to go independent route. In particular she shares her bad experience with web masters (“web pimps”) who trick the girls and how important it is to own your content. She also talks about the 24/7 live web cams setup in her house.

This video is definitely worth watching. Here it is:

With the popularity of social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, many cam girls leverage them to build a loyal fan base. They have thousands of followers who impatiently waiting for the next update, preferably candid picture or video. And it’s so easy to do such updates these days with the smart phone devices such as iPhone and Android. But many cam models are not aware of the fact that by sharing candid pics and videos taken by smart phones, they give up the geographic location of where those pictures were taken (in many cases the places where they live!). This could lead to the possibility of virtual stalkers to track you down in the real world!

Let me show you the real example so you can see how dangerous this could be. I saw this tweet the other day from one of the models I follow on Twitter:

The link takes you to her Tumbler profile where she posted the candid picture taken via her smartphone. So I saved this picture on my computer, opened it in Photoshop, and viewed the picture file info. And here is what I see:

The picture file contains longitude and magnitude of the place where the picture was taken (most likely in the model’s apartment from what I can see on the picture). So I just copy these two coordinates, paste it into Google Maps and here we go:

It shows me the exact location of where the picture was taken. I can enlarge it and see the satellite view of the building where model lives.  So it becomes really easy for stalker to hunt the model down in the reality. You never know!

You must be scared to death now, at least those of you who have posted candid pictures of yourself on picture sharing sites in the past. But don’t worry. I’ll show you how to fix that.

First of all you need to make sure that geo location services are turned off for your smart phone’s cam. I will guide you through the steps you need to take assuming you have Apple’s iPhone. But if you have other smartphone device, the steps should be similar. So for the iPhone here is what you should do:

1. Click the Home button and go to the Settings

2. Find the Location Services option (if you haven’t upgraded your iPhone lately then you should click on General first). If you see OFF next to it, you should be fine and just do nothing. If you see ON then you could be in trouble. Just click the Location Services and it will take you to the next screen:

3. On the next screen you’ll see the list of applications on your iPhone that use geo location services. Look up the Camera application (it should be on top of the list). If you see ON next to it, you are in trouble:

Turn this option off and now you can safely share your candid pictures taken by this iPhone. Your geoloaction won’t be stored with picture file. Also, to be safe, you need to go to each of the sites where you shared pics taken by this iPhone and delete them as soon as possible.

Be aware that the same problem can exist when you use other similar devices such as digital cameras and camcorders. Check the user manuals of the devices you use to make sure that they don’t attach the geolocation information.

The virtual world of webcam modeling should remain totally isolated from the real world to keep the models safe. So don’t give up your physical location, follow the instructions above and you’ll never get into trouble of meeting virtual stalker in real life.

What’s in a Name? 3 Things to Consider before Creating your Cam Model PersonaBy Angela Leonne, www.angelalive.com

1. First take a minute to think about the kinds of clients you’d like to attract. Then base your character off of what would attract those guys.

Many new performers come into the world of online adult entertainment not understanding that while many men have sexual fantasies surrounding “vanilla” topics, the fetish world is booming. The persona you create in the beginning can greatly influence the kinds of customers who are drawn to you, which will influence your camming experience. For example, while it is true if you are younger looking you may be inclined to put your hair in ponytails, talk in a high-pitched voice, giggle a lot and play up the “barely eighteen” role, you’d better be prepared for the father/daughter incest taboos, the “so how old were you when you lost your virginity” questions, and even the domineering guys desiring to “teach” a younger girl all about sex who will flock to you as a result. So before you name yourself “Just8Teen”, you may want to think outside the regular boy/girl sexual norm, learn a bit about fetishes and taboos, and decide what you are and are not comfortable catering to.

2. Think of a name that you won’t mind sticking to for a while.

While it is true that some experienced cam artists only work one website, it is a good idea to try working different places to see where you will feel the most comfortable and earn the most money. Most mainstream websites like Streamate and ImLive do not allow you to share outside information with customers and will shut you down for doing so. This is why you should keep the same screen name wherever you work. If you switch websites or even wind up building your own site one day, you want any guy who ever spent lots of money with you to be able to find you easily so he can do so over and over again!

3. Think of a name that you can stick to for a while.

Many performers prefer creating names that run in the format of “First name, Last name” or “First name, adjective”. While this helps with the inevitable “what’s your name” question, there is absolutely nothing wrong with creating any type of name you desire. But once again it makes sense to think about the possibility that camming turns out to be a great source of income and you wind up doing it for several years. If you start out at age 18 and name yourself “SexyTeen784”, but wind up camming until you’re 27, it may be kind of difficult to pull that off long-term. Likewise if you’re a natural blonde but might dye your hair one day, you definitely don’t want to name yourself “BlondieXXX123”.

Some of these tips may seem to be common sense, but it is often easy to overlook the small things when starting out a new business venture. Good luck to you, and happy camming!

The Number One Reason Cam Girls Burn Out…

by Alex Shwarz on April 4, 2011 · 1 comment

The Number One Reason Can Girls Burn Out...This blog post was written by independent webcam model Stacey. She is absolutely right – choose your niche and stick to it!

“Can I Say No?” – so many new cam girls ask this question. It might seem like an odd question but it is true. There are so many reasons that a cam girl might think she can not say no. The big one is money. Many new cam girls might think, if they do every type of shows and everything that guys ask, they will make more money. While this might be true in the short term, it is not a good way to be a long term successful cam girl.

I will give you a personal example. During my first year of camming I did a lot of shows that I was not 100% comfortable with or where I was pushing my limits. I had one cam show where a guy asked for something that needed to be done in a extreme way. I told him that I have never done it before, that it would be hard for me to do but I was willing to try. Well I pushed my limits for him and at the end he got all pissed off at me and wanted a refund. Looking back at it now I should have never done the show in the first place. I understand now why he was unhappy – it was not as extreme show as he wanted. I was upset because I pushed my limits and humiliated myself for a guy and he was not even happy.

Cam girls should never do anything on cam that “they” feel will humiliate and degrade them. No amount of money worth losing your self-respect. Agreeing to the show that is outside of ones comfort zone normally puts them in a bad mood. No one likes upset and unhappy cam girl. So why let the asshole ruin it for the nice guys. There is no reason to do anything that one is not comfortable with. There will be other guys and other shows that one will be more than happy to do.

There are girls out there for every type of guy and guys out there for every type of girl. It is important to set ones limits and choose the type of guys that one wants to work with. The nice thing about being a cam girl is the freedom that it gives. This freedom does not just include the hours that they work, but also the type of shows they do and the type of guys that they work with…. being a cam girl gives ones the freedom to run their own business. This means setting their limits and choosing their customers. Work with guys that you like doing things that you like and you will make lots of money and be a successful and happy cam girl.

Have you ever thought that cam girl market is getting oversatured and one day you may not survive the competition? Read this great article written by webcam model Sandra London where she explains why you shouldn’t worry (assuming you do things right and take your webcam modeling career serious). Also don’t forget to check out her great blog.

These days, with many countries experiencing a massive economic downturn, several industries are being outsourced and some are even disappearing completely. Recession, bankruptcy, and foreclosure is running rampant and dampening the spirits of many of the world’s citizens who had heretofore been fairly positive in their expectations for the future for the world at large.

In a curious form of juxtaposition, one particular industry which serves as a counterpoint, and which is increasing its exposure at lightning speed, is that of the online “live sex” industry. In this vein, the camgirl industry is booming exponentially and is projected to increase, not decline, over time.

The major live cam sites such as MyFreeCams, Streamate and My Girl Fund have tens of thousands of women signed up, ready and willing to go online to bare their bodies, and sometimes their souls, for a ‘token of appreciation’ (or several). This can translate to mega-bucks and lead to an actual sustainable ‘career’ as a work-from-homer who just so happens to work in the nude in her living room.

Of those denizens of women, however, only a few rise to the top and become ‘mega’ chat hostesses earning in excess of $20,000 a month consistently. Many others will see their dreams of fat paychecks and easy living become nothing more than a nightmare of chargebacks, dead time, rude men, and long waiting periods between payment, hoping for that ‘one’ cam customer who will rescue them from the tedious nature of ‘waiting’ to please someone online. According to the law of averages, the majority of women committed to a camming career will fall somewhere in the middle on the earnings scale, and able to adjust their expectations and/or lifestyle in exchange for what will amount to a reasonable monthly salary for their household.

Because of the allure of this niche industry, many new women join the ranks of adult hostessing everyday. Scores of women who have never worked in the adult industry before and have held ‘vanilla’ jobs their whole lives are suddenly making the switch to voyeurize themselves for money. The fear of oversaturation of the market has begun to mount. Yet, new and current cam-girls ought not fear this rapid emergence of new femme bots. Not at all.

The main reason why more women joining popular sites isn’t that bad is the concept of, uh—”stick-to-it-iveness”……(yes, probably a made-up word, but you get the meaning) and individual motivation— traits in which a lot of people are sorely lacking in regards to a consistent work ethic. A LOT of women joining the ranks does not, in and of itself, correlate to those same women:

a) sticking with their site of choice, especially if they get frustrated easily because they jumped in to the business assuming the money would just flood their account from minute one of being on cam

b) reading extensively as to the different ways they can generate income (active AND passive) and devoting time to training themselves to SELL effectively. This is sales, after all.

c) working a regular schedule on the site so that they can become known and stick out in the sea of hostesses. When you go into business for yourself, you are officially a BRAND. You need to be a memorable brand. And one that is ‘open for business’ so to speak, on a regular basis.

d) creating the best profile possible. Men are visual creatures. Great quality pictures, or at least ‘clear’ , recent, and relevant are what often makes or breaks a man’s decision to spend his hard-earned money on a strange nude girl before his screen.

e) regularly updating their content/picture sets. Yes, ‘you’ are always ‘you’, but you can repackage yourself and your look a million-fold to appeal to as many customers as possible. The easiest way to do this is to constantly create something ‘new’ about you: costume, picture location, hair, etc. A set of pictures or videos that you made ‘on the fly’ could pick up a new customer who you would never have had if you had not experimented with different ways to be ‘you’.

etc……

So, you know the expression, “You can lead a _horse_ to _water______ but you can’t make them __drink_________?”

Well, let’s replace the blanks with ” You can lead a woman to financial opportunity, but you can’t make them rich”. And the only way to be rich is to ‘work’ for it. And like Oprah once said, “Nothing will work unless you do.” For women who really want to commit to secure financial freedom in this genre of adult entertainment, the sky is the limit.

Now, as an adult entertainer and camgirl myself, why do I care about the financial freedom of other women?
Because, there is no use in “hogging the knowledge”. A few of the women who are just now entering the online legion of ‘boob’ may be your biggest motivator or resource guru one day. Those same women may help YOU out with new creative and innovative strategies. Or serve as unofficial advisors in regards to financial info/tips/new goldmines…..

And, ultimately, because YOU are still gonna have to “mine” for that gold and do the WORK if you want it, and not just ‘read’ or ‘know’ about it. You know? ;)

Hope this helps!
Sandra London
